Abstract. Despite the expectations that exist in relation to efforts to develop competence, and despite the large amounts of resources allocated to it, there is a clear lack of competence-based research in companies and other organizations based on empirical research. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of research on the strategies for the development of competencies in organizations, their prerequisites and consequences. In particular, the following three questions will be addressed: (1) Why do organizations invest in the development of competencies? (2) What effects can realistically be achieved through the development of competencies? (3) What characterizes successful strategies for developing competences in organizations? Before considering these issues, different views on the meaning of the concepts of competence and competence development are presented and discussed.
