The article deals with the acquisition of communicative and lexical skills in the process of teaching translation of popular scientific literature to students of the non-linguistic university. Particular attention is paid to the procedure of teaching translation and working with special vo-cabulary as a part of the communicative approach. This approach implies students’ active partic-ipation in the choice of means of translation and evaluation of the result; It significantly increas-es the motivation of students to learn and, as a result, learning potential. According to the au-thors, the development of students' communicative skills in the process of learning to translate is promoted by a system of communicative activities, including team work, project work and tasks based on the method of demonstrating errors.
